Introduction

CABFishMAN project contributes to enhancing the value of Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF) by providing tools and resources for the design and assessment of community–led local development strategies, which serve as a means for promoting social well-being, SSF cultural and natural heritage, and health tourism in coastal destinations.

This contribution requires strengthening the role of coastal communities in local development, the governance of SSF together with the rest of maritime activities [Regulation (EU) No 508/2014, EU Blue Growth strategy] or promoting the development of tourism actions: cultural heritage-based tourism, underwater archaeological/natural parks, etc. based on UNESCO experience. CABFISHMANAN carried out a non-market valuation of the socioeconomic impact of SSF and its cultural and natural heritage in the European Atlantic area in terms of touristic and economic development.

Results of this analysis involve:

  • Survey design for non-market valuation of cultural and natural heritage of SSF in the European Atlantic area.
  • Methodological design for non-market valuation of cultural and natural heritage of SSF in the European Atlantic area.
  • Valuation of cultural and natural heritage of SSF in the European Atlantic area.

Latter result, the Valuation of cultural and natural heritage of SSF in the European Atlantic area is presently in this Shiny for convenience for policy makers and other stakeholders.

Partners involved in CABFishMAN project have worked from 2020 to 2022 in carrying out this analysis, mainly focusing on Cultural Heritage as the part of the picture that has not been comprehensively covered in literature, but those analyzed together with Intangible Cultural Heritage in the case of combined port and natural landscape related to SSF in the Atlantic area.

Methods

Stated preference techniques of contingent valuation method for the valuation of use and non-use values of natural and cultural heritage of the European Atlantic area (Bateman et al., 2002; Boyle, 2017; Champ et al., 2017) have been implemented in this Shiny tool. Contingent valuation is based upon Random utility theory for valuation purposes by means of discrete choice models allowing estimation of the utility for individuals of the existence, conservation and/or preservation of heritage as it is or in improved conditions.

Contingent valuation has been implemented according to the parametric specifications of Hanemann (1984) and Kriström (1990).The former do not consider true zeros, identified by means of a follow up question, while the latter does consider them (Carson & Hanemann, 2005; Hanemann, 1984; Kriström, 1990).
